Back at home, when I was younger, I was not interested in cooking nor I would go to the kitchen and see Queen Goat or Mother Queen Snake were cooking. I would only help out with the basic things like cut the garlic and onions, beat the eggs, peel and cut the potatoes and so on. Hey, I ain’t that “siew jie” (Rich Girl) that doesn’t cook at all. Occasionally, I would cook up come vegetables with the help from Queen Goat of course. When I was younger, both King Dragon and I would cook especially on Sundays. Of course, I would be there sitting on the dining table peeling and cutting onions with teary eyes, chopping the garlic finely and prepare the potatoes for the curry. Then, King Dragon would be cooking there while I will be running around the kitchen preparing the ingredients for him. Wasn’t much of a cooking for me but I learned how to do the basic preparations. You think it is easy to prepare? Not easy, I tell you.. If no one prepares, you guys got nothing to eat… *hehe* Back then, the only thing I was expected was those 2 minute noodles, frying the sausages and french fries.
Then, off I went to Subang Jaya for my A Levels where I stayed in the Taylor’s campus. Beginning, we stuffed ourselves with delicious out side food. As time goes by, we got sicked of it. That is when we started to cook a little, something easy and quick. Once, we cooked spaghetti with lots of tomato sauce. Beginning it was tasty until the tomato starts to kick in. Thats where I felt like vomitting. I love tomato sauce but too much… Yuck!! Those days, there is pasar malam (night market) located in SS15. All of the housemates would walk all the way there to get our groceries such as fruits, vegetables and dried food. Even those days, my cooking was not that fantastic but edible.
When I went back to Subang Jaya again for my degree, my new bunch of housemates and I started to eat in as well. Our landlady did not allow us to cook. So, as alternative, we got rice cookers. One rice cooker is used to boil our can soup. Another rice cooker used to fry vegetables like Kang Kong with sambal belacan and cook our meat. Our specialty meat is those strips of crab meat fried with kentucky flour or those can fish with black bean. Once cooking is done, the same rice cooker is used to cook our rice. One time, we even used the rice cookers to have steamboat!! Don’t play-leh…
Those were the begining of my cooking hobby..
After 18 months cooking in the rice cooker in Subang, I came to Perth. My first semester in Curtin I was fortunate enough to be living in a flat stayed by all Malaysians. All 5 of us (Even though there were 6 housemates including me, my toilet mate did not join us because she busy dating in the room via online with the boyfriend
) plus Boss Darling would prepare, cook and wash up together. Even for the next three semesters, housemates come and go, I still cooked in that flat for Boss Darling and myself. My cooking then, was improving slowly, learning from Boss Darling, King Dragon, Queen Goat, Mother Queen Snake and P.M.I.L. Till these very day, I am glad to say, my cooking has improved. Like old saying “The Way To A Man’s Heart Is Through The Stomach”, even Boss Darling is happy with my cooking.
The last time I went back to Malaysia, I got the chanced to cook for my family some simple dish. My Queen Goat was impressed that her little princess can cook up delicious food. Guess, when I am back in Malaysia, I have to cook up another storm of delicious food for my family.
